The media is a life force; shifting, breathing and constantly moving. Technology is constantly changing the way we consume information and journalists, fashion houses and artists either embrace these changes or fight them. This evolution is predictable and inevitable.
However what could not have been foreseen was a global pandemic having a significant impact on the way that we work. As humans, as students and as Fabrik. As the editors-in-chief, myself, Pablo and Izarbe have spent this first term balancing the difficult emotions which come with being unable to produce, express and share work which we wished to create. We have also had to make difficult decisions such as not allowing ten shoots to take place due to the second lockdown and prioritising the safety of our team.
We were, and still are, unable to work in the way that we usually would, creating regular content in large teams and incorporating people from all different elements of the Fabrik team. But as a team, we have evolved and reworked our approach, so that Fabrik can begin to thrive once again. The sooner we can all get back to creating, investigating and expressing ourselves, the better.
Although we have been quiet, the second lockdown as been incredibly productive. All of us at Fabrik have been exploring new facets of expression, planning projects for the future and innovating new ways of working and publishing our work. And our relaunch is both an acknowledgement of the fact that the way we do things at Fabrik will have to change, but also a celebration of the fact that this change is pushing us, motivating us and forcing us to be more ambitious than ever. We will be starting this new term with our Hidden Identities shoot, which explores the multi-faceted nature of identities and how we express this through fashion. A virtual, live-streamed runway is also in pre-production; it’ll be part runway, part performance art and include dancers, musicians and the fashion innovation which we promise at Fabrik. Lastly, the journalist team are planning a four part podcast series in celebration of all things feminism and fashion, which will be released in time with international woman’s month.
All of us at Fabrik are grateful to our followers for being patient with us in this strange time, and for engaging with our social media takeovers which we’ve been posting on instagram. The wait is over. We are back, we are stronger than ever, and we are excited for our beautiful and inclusive team to work together in creating something beautiful.
